Herb Lewis is a retired US Air Force Officer after serving more than 20 years. Entering the USAF in April 1973, 3 months before high school graduation, he served as an Instructor at the Global and Water Survival Schools, with two years teaching Air Force contractors who required flight on military aircraft to bring their new systems into operation. His clients included aircrew members in rank up to 2 star general, international officers, ROTC Cadets, civilian contractors and astronauts. Assigned for two years at the schoolhouse where new instructor candidates train for 6 months in an 1800-hour course over six months. During this time he completed his private pilots license, the USAF Master Instructor Rating, Parachuting Jump School, attained Jumpmaster status with over 150 jumps, courses in curriculum development and testing at the Air Force Air University, and completed several degrees; AA in Management, BS Management/Human Resources, AS Survival Rescue Operations, AA Survival Arts. An education degree is pending.

After nine years in the enlisted corps Herb completed Officers Candidate School and Undergraduate Pilot Training. Assigned as a Forward Air Controller flying the O-2 (Cessna 337) for 4 years, his follow-on assignments included 4 variants of the F-111 and EF-111 aircraft over 11 years. He has been stationed at over 65 bases in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He accrued over 2800 flying hours, 7 rotations to the Middle East in Gulf War One, including over 150 combat hours in Joint Attack missions with NATO Allies, being trained in over 47 different military and civilian aircraft.

After his retirement in 1993, Herb pursued a commercial flying career with brief interruptions while working at Micron, DeBest Plumbing, Wing Farms, and United Airlines, Horizon Air, and TWA. Herb joined Southwest Airlines in 1998, and promoted to Captain, November 2004. He has currently logged more than 19,000 flying hours.

He teaches a Survival and Leadership Seminar for Camp Big Horn, Missoula, MT in conjunction with Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills Canada, and volunteers his time by teaching 5tth grade students about aviation via Southwest Airlines Adopt-A-Pilot program for the last 10 years, Love Inc of the Treasure Valley as a budget counselor, and as a marriage mentor to couples with his wife Joy.

They are a blended family with 6 kids ranging in age from 16 to 30. Having family as a priority they enjoy camping, 4-wheeling, family get-togethers, and traveling as hobbies and recreation. Being very active in church and related events, Herb and Joy invest in others as others have invested in them. They created and developed Families By Design Seminar over a 2 year period, using the previous 8 years experience of growing a successful family, and have presented it together several times in various venues.
